![]() The "paste" Utility The "paste" utility allows you to copy fields from a file and send them to standard output. It is usually used to reorder fields in a file. The "paste" utility follows the basic syntax shown below: paste -s -d[delimiter] filelist Consider the example below in which we use the cut utility to extract data from the "ls -l" command and then paste that information back together using the paste utility.
